New Haven Register:  " Christian preacher has won a settlement from the city that will allow him to share his message on city streets without interference from police.

Jesse Morrell of Cheshire, who practices “open-air preaching” but was chased off downtown streets one night in 2004, also won $25,000 in damages from New Haven.

Morrell sued the city, then-Police Chief Francisco Ortiz Jr. and four police officers after police ordered him not to preach in front of four downtown bars on May 16, 2004. He had attempted to speak outside The Playwright, Neat Lounge and Alchemy, all on Temple Street, and Bottega Lounge on Chapel Street, but four police officers told him he would be arrested if he did so, his lawsuit said. One threw a stepstool Morrell used into a garbage can, his lawsuit claimed."
