PHILADELPHIA — Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund Center for Academic Freedom will be available to answer questions from the media at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania building following each day of trial in DeJohn v. Temple University.

“No one should face retaliation at a public university, the marketplace of ideas, because they hold to certain ideas not favored by school officials,” said ADF Senior Counsel David French, director of CAF.  “Now that Temple University can no longer employ its discriminatory speech code, these officials must be held accountable for their actions toward Christian DeJohn.  They can no longer be permitted to punish a student simply because he expresses a viewpoint they don’t like.”

In February 2006, ADF filed a lawsuit on behalf of DeJohn, a graduate student at Temple and a sergeant in the Pennsylvania National Guard.  DeJohn was repeatedly thwarted in his attempts to earn a master’s degree after expressing his political views on war in class and on campus.  In March, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania issued a permanent injunction against Temple University’s former speech code policy.

The court also rejected the university’s attempt to dismiss DeJohn’s claim that school officials retaliated against him by thwarting his ability to complete his master’s thesis and graduate with a degree.  In September, a federal judge rejected a bid by the university to dismiss the case.
