ADF commends DOE for directing schools to take sexual harassment seriously

Friday, November 16, 2018

The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Legal Counsel Kellie Fiedorek regarding the U.S. Department of Education’s proposed Title IX regulation on sexual harassment that provides legal clarity regarding schools’ obligations, increased protections for victims, and the establishment of a more predictable and fair process for resolving complaints:

“Schools have an obligation to protect all students from sex discrimination and harassment, which too often results in survivors struggling to complete their education due to physical and emotional suffering. We commend DOE for recognizing that the voices of survivors, accused persons, students, and schools matter. We share Secretary DeVos’s commitment that a ‘better way forward’ under Title IX means ensuring that ‘every survivor is taken seriously and that every person accused knows responsibility is not predetermined.’ This proposed rule ensures greater protections against harassment and a predictable, equitable, and prompt process that resolves complaints. Under this rule, everybody wins.”
